The Difference Between Car Engines

If you’re shopping for a car, truck or SUV, you’ll find a wide selection of pre-owned vehicles at your local Orlando, FL used car dealership. Our inventory includes some of the best selling brands, including Chevy, Dodge, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Nissan, and Toyota. When you’re on the hunt for a used car, one of the most important considerations is which engine type is best suited for your lifestyle. We at Universal Used Car Superstore thinks it’s important that you know the difference between engine types so you can find the right vehicle for your needs.

Different Types of Engines

There are many different types of engines, which can sometimes make the car-buying process confusing. Engines vary among brands, model types, and even between different trims of the same model. Some models come with more than one engine type, giving you a choice of which will suit your needs the best.

Here are the three most common engine types:

  • Four-Cylinder Engines: Four-cylinder (also referred to as I-4 or inline-four) engines provide excellent fuel efficiency and enough power to suit most driving situations. Four-cylinder engines are well suited for most compact cars and sedans. However, they may not be adequate for larger vehicles or for hauling/towing.
  • V6 Engines: V6 engines are built to provide more power and performance. They are also more suited for towing/hauling, so if you have a boat or RV, a V6 engine might be a better choice. Four-cylinder engines have the pistons arranged in a line (which is why these engines are called I-4 or inline-four), while V6 (and V8) engines have the pistons arranged in a V shape, hence their names.
  • V8 Engines: The V8 engine is the bigger, stronger cousin of the V6. These engines provide excellent towing and hauling capabilities, as well as a smooth acceleration. The only downside to V8 engines is that they are not as fuel-efficient.
